FO: Herringbone Mitts
This is my latest FO, and also my latest design!
Initially I wanted to make another pair of endpaper mitts, but I didn’t have any fingering weight yarn in the stash that was appealing to me and I didn’t want to go buy anymore considering my latest anti-sock feelings. This, combined with my recent desire for some tweedy herringbone goodness, and viola!
In the end they are very similar to Eunny’s endpapers, but I am putting out another pattern, because my design necessitates stitch changes for different sizing and because the numbers are significantly different due to using a larger yarn.
I hope you enjoy! And of course, please, please let me know if you see any problems.
Herringbone Mitts:
Yarn: Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool
Colors: MC- 022 Yam & CC- 009 Verdigris
Yardage: I have no scale but it’s about half a skein of each for a pair
Needles: 2 US size 1 (2.25 mm) circular needles
Gauge: 28 sts and 32 rows = 4 inches
Size and Fit:
measured around the knuckles of your hand (minus the thumb)
Small: 6″-6.5″
Medium: 7″-7.5″
Large: 8″-8.5″
Sizes are written for S(M,L)
Charts shown for size medium (a 12 st pattern repeat). Small is a 10 stitch pattern repeat, and large is a 14 stitch pattern repeat.
These will fit very close, and are not likely to be stretchy unless you are a very loose colorwork knitter. Since this is a dk weight yarn (and not very elastic), you may be able to substitute another, stretchier dk to get a little more give in the end product.
I think of Silky Wool, as a very light dk – almost sport weight, so make sure your gauge matches
Notes:
The two sides of the thumb gusset are different in order to continue the herringbone pattern.
These mitts are identical, and the pattern is easy to memorize once you get going, the knitting itself will give visual clues as to what comes next.
Instructions:
⁃ CO 40(48,56) sts in a nice stretchy method – I like the long tail cast on
⁃ split the sts evenly onto the 2 circular needles and join to work in the round
⁃ work cuff in 1×1 rib for 1″
⁃ knit 1 round even and join CC yarn, then switch to chart A to begin colorwork
⁃ work pattern from chart 1 – do 4 repeats
Thumb: ( I only made the chart for the medium size thumb – I trust ya’ll to adjust accordingly)
⁃ switch to chart B: thumb increase chart [to increase 16(18,20) sts in thumb] 56(66,76) sts at end of thumb chart
⁃ Next round, work 8(9,10) sts across thumb section as in chart and slip onto waste yarn
Knuckles:
⁃ work main hand section 40 (48, 56 sts) in pattern for 3 repeats.
⁃ cut cc yarn, k 1 rnd in MC
⁃ work in 1×1 rib for 1/2 inch.
⁃ BO all sts
Thumb Finishing:
⁃ Pick up 16(18,20) thumb sts from waste yarn and 2 sts from inside of thumb to prevent holes: 18(20,22) sts total
⁃ knit even in MC for one round
⁃ work in 1×1 rib for 1/2 inch
⁃ BO all sts
⁃ weave in all ends.
Lovely! Impressive! Kudos! 🙂

Wow, gorgeous, and thank you for sharing the pattern – I’ve not yet done colorwork so I’m not sure I can jump in with both feet, but I’ll certainly share it with others – they’re stunning!

I saw your pattern at the looped yarn in DC and it looked so amazing, but I was wondering, can I do it with double-pointed needles as well? I am not a big fan of circular needles. I many should I use? thanks so much!
Sylvie said this on August 16, 2011 at 9:22 pm |
Hi Sylvie,
Yes you could certainly use double point needles. When I use double points (not that often) I use 5 just because I feel like 4 tends to pull at the stitches between. But this is a pretty small project, so 4 might just be less cumbersome.
I can look over the pattern again and see if I can give you any pointers. I know I adored mine and I gave some to my sister in law.
Out of curiosity, where did you see it? I wasn’t aware it was available anywhere but as a ravelry download.

Hi Brandy! Thanks SO much for your quick respond! I’m looking forward to hear more about it!
It was in dc at the looped yarn shop, a cute shop where your pattern was used to as a sample of yarn. The ladies gave me your website to try doing it!
Thanks again!

Hello,
I too saw your mittens knitted at the looped yarn shop in D.C. when I was in town for a conference. I’m really excited to start these, but as I read through the pattern noticed that whatever was done for the thumb is only for size M and I will be doing large, with no real idea how to adjust as you mentioned. Can you offer me some help or instructions about exactly what is supposed to be done. I have done mittens before so I assume this is a gusset, but maybe not so I want to know exactly what I’m getting into before I ruin yarn that can’t be frogged. I know it is kinda daring, but I only get one shot with this yarn so I want it to be right.
Thanks much.

I was basically curious about if you ever considered replacing the page layout of your site? It is well written; I enjoy what you have got to say. But maybe you can include a little more in the way of written content so people can connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of wording for only having one or two graphics. Maybe you can space it out better?
